English Voice Over: Finding the Right Voice for VMEH

Some English Voice Over jobs ask for big and energetic reads. Others are much quieter, but somehow stay with you longer. My recent project for VMEH definitely falls into the second category.

VMEH is a volunteer organisation that brings comfort and company to people in hospitals and care homes. When they asked me to record the English Voice Over for their video, I was really happy to be involved. But in all honesty, I also felt a bit of pressure. The French version was voiced by Alain Chaillot, whose delivery was absolutely spot on. His voice is deep and rich, very different to mine, so I wanted to make sure my read respected the tone and feeling of the original without trying to imitate something I’m not.

One thing that made the process much smoother was Nicky’ Stewart-Schmidt's translation. It’s easy to forget just how much a good translation matters until you’re in the booth reading it out loud. A well translated script has a natural rhythm. It flows. It feels like it was written in the target language to begin with. Nicky’s translation was clear, warm, and easy to connect with, which meant I could focus fully on the message rather than wrestling with awkward phrasing.

Projects like this remind me that voice over isn’t always about big performances. Sometimes it’s simply about helping a good message reach the people who need to hear it.
